States tried to install them in the
Detroit area and other heavily popu-
lated centers to forestall possible
attacks by potential enemies. "It
became known as the 'Groner corn-
mittee,' and I got too
much attention," the
rabbi recalls, "and my
sermons on this caused
some rumblings in the
congregation. But I'm
still proud of my efforts
on the missile issue —
and we succeeded."
In the 1990s, Rabbi
Groner gave a sermon
favorable to President
Bill Clinton and drew
the ire of a couple of
prominent Shaarey
Rabbi Groner
Zedek members who
had opposing view-
points. In 2000, he gave two sermons
lauding Sen. Joe Lieberman, D-Conn.,
who had become the first Jewish vice
presidential nominee — one sermon
after the Democratic convention and
one just before the November election.
"That apparently was one too
many," he mused, "because I heard

about it from some members. I feel it's
appropriate to mix politics into a ser-
mon, as long as you have a moral
point of view — not just sound like
you may be endorsing a candidate."
On rare occasions,
Rabbi Groner has
received unsolicited, and
unheeded, advice from a
board member or two to
give a sermon on a topic
only that person might
care about. That remind-
ed him of another story:
"A woman comes to the
rabbi and asks him to
deliver a stern sermon on
adultery. Then she adds:
And please look directly
at my husband while
you're doing it.'

Not Completed

Rabbi Groner said he would eventual-
ly like to give sermons on "guilt,"
truth" and "success" — subjects he
really hasn't covered completely. "I've
been formulating ideas about them for
almost 50 years," he said.
