Bomber Strikes
In Jerusalem

Jerusalem/Jerusalem Post
n 18-year-old female
Palestinian suicide bomber
blew herself up near a crowded
bus station in Jerusalem Wednesday
afternoon, killing two border policemen
and wounding 16 civilians, including
four seriously, police and rescue officials
said.
The explosion occurred at 3:40 p.m.
at the city's northern French Hill inter-
section when Zeina Issa Abu Salem
from the Askar refugee camp in Nablus
blew up the 5 kilograms of explosive
device in her possession. The intersec-
tion has been the scene of repeated
bombings over four
years of violence
The border police-
men were identified as
Mamoya Tahio, 20,
from Rehovo and
Menachem Komeni,
19, from Moshav
Aminadav, outside of
Jerusalem.
Tahio
According to police
reports, the bomber's
intention had been to
explode at the bus
stop where 20-30 peo-
ple were standing, and
it was the presence of
border police guards
that prevented a
Komeni
potentially much
more lethal attack.
The bomber blew herself up as an
Israeli border policeman approached
her and asked to see her documents,
police sources said. Since the outbreak
of violence four years ago, she was the
eighth female who has managed to
carry out a suicide bombing attack in
Israel. The previous seven were all
recruited and dispatched by Fatah.
Referring to army action in the West
Bank city of Rarnallah. Wednesday
morning, Jerusalem Police Commander
Ilan Franco couldn't immediately say if
that operation was connected with the
bombing. "We are checking how she
got here, who transported her.
Jerusalem has been on heightened
alert for some time now," he said.
"We have already passed one High
Holiday, and several more holidays
are in the coming days and weeks, so
Jerusalem police will remain on high
alert at least until the end of the holi-
days." I I
