a young age with autism and a garden
variety of other developmental disabili-
ties, I realized that, like almost every-
thing else, it was not something that
was going to happen easily and natural-
ly. It never seemed to be the right time
or the right situation to accommodate
her many special needs.

be pulled together in such a short time;

and dedication can accomplish mira-
cles, and watching Molly, Lauren,
Stephanie and Danny perform their
mitzvot was miraculous in every sense
of the word.
When I got up to speak on Friday
night, having just heard my daughter
say the blessings over the candles and
the challah, seeing the excited smile on
her face and feeling the love that virtu-
ally permeated the room, it was hard to
find the words to say; and I was glad
that most of the time I am a writer
instead of a public speaker. Fortunately,
it was one of those times when the sim-
