here are certain things I
never expect to see; and,
until last week, the sight of
my daughter, Molly,
laughing and clapping her hands while
dozens of rejoicing friends and family
members carried her around a
balloon-filled room in a chair, was

definitely high on that list.
Since Molly was born 17'/2 years
ago, life has been a virtual roller coaster
ride; and I have tried to maintain a
healthy balance of optimism and reality,
kind of a "hope-for-the-best-but-pre-
pare-for-the-worst" philosophy.
But even my best hope had never
approached the wonder of watching
Molly and her friends celebrate this rite
of passage in such a special and mean-
