scheduled Oct. 2. Manchel heads to
his upcoming gig with one strong and
positive recording critique behind him.
"David Manchel is a student of great
songwriters, a student of great songs,"
says Detroit Metro Times reviewer Brian
Smith. "So much so that he approach-
es both with a careful eye and consid-
erate sense of time and place. What's
more, he understands that everything
in rock 'n' roll's been done already, so
he's purposely backdated.
"Welcome Back to the Same Old Me
sounds like a record this guy had to
make. Even better, Manchel's voice is,
in fact, listenable, bristly and tender."
Manchel's influences include the
Monkees, the Beach Boys and the
Who, the latter group showing up in
the song "Dear Mr. Townshend." He
also enjoys classical music and world
music, with a special affinity for the
music of film. "She's Cruel" particular-
ly evokes the sense of merged styles
expressed in a distinctive way.
Manchel, whose music appreciation
developed as he grew up in Southfield,
became bar mitzvah at Temple
Emanu-El in Oak Park and graduated
from Southfield High School. He
earned his bachelor's degree in psy-
chology at the University of Michigan
and his master's degree in clinical psy-
chology at the Center for Humanistic
Studies graduate school in Farmington
Hills.
A clinical supervisor working with
seriously and persistently mentally ill
adults for Easter Seals, Manchel also
has a private practice working with
adolescents, adults and couples.
"Music is very psychotherapeutic,"
says Manchel, whose ties to Judaism
are maintained through attendance at
services on the High Holidays.
"For me, the deepest therapy is
being able to write songs and convey
meaningful lyrics. Musical experiences
keep me attuned to emotions, and I
think expressing these emotions helps
me understand the experiences and
emotions of others." LI

Joints are an integral part of keeping our bodies
in motion. But when a joint causes pain, everything
suffers...participating in sports, carrying in the
groceries, even simply walking. Sinai-Grace Hospital
Joint Replacement Center was designed to ease
suffering from joint pain and help get patients back
to a normal daily routine.

Joint replacement is an orthopaedic success story,
enabling hundreds of thousands of people to live
fuller, more active lives. Using metal alloys, high-grade
plastics and polymeric materials, our orthopaedic
surgical team can replace a painful, dysfunctional
joint with a highly functional, long-lasting prosthesis.
Over the past half-century, there have been many
advances in the design, construction and implantation
of artificial hip joints, resulting in a high percentage
of successful long-term outcomes.
