TV DEBUT from page 43

about the Vardons.
ABC found Fairway, said Helfman, because the
company has been around for so long and could get
the job done.
A major part of the makeover, Helfman said, was
installing high-tech communication and safety devices
in the home.
To select the state-of-the-art equipment, the ABC
producers turned to one of Lance's teachers, Julie
Unatin of Huntington Woods.
"Lance is very bright and this equipment enhances
his life like never before," she said. But Unatin could
not discuss further details until after the show airs some
time in October or November. "Lance did say he has

been waiting for this his whole life," she said.
A fourth-generation company, Fairway was started
in 1926 by Helfman's great-grandfather, who named
it for its "fair way" to do business. His family was a
pioneer that invented and patented the second-story
addition they called a dormer, Helfman said.
Helfman, a graduate of Hillel Day School of
Metropolitan Detroit and Bloomfield Hills Andover
High School, and Becker, a West Bloomfield High
School grad, were best friends while students at
Michigan State University. Becker bought Helfman's
father and uncles' half of the company.
Though neither Helfman nor Becker set their sights
on Hollywood, both enjoyed the experience.

"The stars were very down to earth," Helfman said.
"I was shocked at how friendly they were, especially
Ty Pennington, Paul DiMeo and Tracy Hutson."
Becker found the movie people very accommodat-
ing, though it wasn't easy having a TV crew in the
middle of a construction zone. "We know how to
rebuild a house; they know how to film it. But to put
both together, that's a very difficult task," Becker said.
"The experience was unbelievable," Helfman
added, "an amazing learning and team-building
encounter. We've been able to keep that energy, spirit
and enthusiasm going in our everyday work. We had
it before, but this experience took it to a whole new
level."
