Digest Fact-Finding In Sudan New York/JTA — The American Jewish World Service is calling for stepped-up humanitarian efforts in Sudan after its president returned from a fact-finding trip to the African coun- try. Ruth Messinger returned this week from Sudan's Darfur region, where humanitarian groups and U.S. officials say Sudanese Arabs backed by the gov- ernment have killed hundreds of thou- sands of African tribesmen. The trip took Messinger to three refugee camps housing between 70,000 and 120,000 people, where she met survivors of the attacks. "The nature of life in these places is really appalling," Messinger said. "There's a huge need for more money and more support." AJWS has raised more than $200,000 for the cause and helped create the Jewish Coalition for Sudan Relief. Because of the high incidence of rape victims among the Sudanese refugees, the coalition has agreed to fund a reproductive health-care work- er, Messinger reported. In. Israel, Sara and Miriam have lived in the Negev desert all their lives. But without water, their children may not be so lucky. For Sara and Miriam, Israel is home. Their parents settled in the Negev over 30 years ago. Sara and Miriam know everything there is about this region. Except for one thing. How can they continue living here without water? A 12-year drought has ravaged Israel, especially the Negev. Unless water is provided soon, Sara, Miriam and young people like them will not be able to call it home much longer. Jewish National Fund has pledged to build 75 life- sustaining reservoirs throughout Israel and the Negev, so young families can continue calling Israel home for generations to come. They are the future of Israel. And they need your help now. JNF has been the caretaker of the land of Israel on behalf of Jewish people everywhere for over a century. JNF's water projects have significantly increased Israel's water resources through reservoir and dam construction, river rehabilitation, water conservation and recycling. But much more still needs to be done. We can do it. All we need is for you to do your part. Please give generously. Together, we can make the desert bloom and our people flourish. Gidone Busch, a mentally unstable Chasidic Jew, was shot to death by police when he brandished a hammer on a Brooklyn street. Police said Busch had lunged at officers at the scene, but Busch's family rejected the police account and filed suit against the city. A jury had cleared the city of responsibility in November 2003, but Judge Sterling Johnson Jr., of U.S. District Court in Brooklyn, over- turned the verdict Sept. 9. The judge said he found witness accounts credi- ble that described Busch as standing still when police opened fire.
