Communal Leaders Meet
The Jewish Federation and the United
Jewish Foundation of Metropolitan
Detroit will hold their combined annual
meeting at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21,
at Adat Shalom Synagogue.
Highlighting the meeting will be the
election and installation of officers and
members at large to the Federation and
Foundation boards and the installation
of Peter M. Alter, who succeeds
Lawrence S. Jackier as president of the
Federation. In recognition of outstand-
ing leadership and service to the com-
munity, Federation's highest honor, the
Fred M. Butzel Award, will be presented
to Stanley Frankel, a longstanding com-
munity activist and philanthropist.
In corporate partnership with
BankOne, the event is open to the com-
munity. A dessert reception will follow.
There is no cost to attend, but reserva-
tions are requested by Sept. 20. To

Dr. Melvin A. Lester and Dr. William
"Bob" Silverstone will be honored by the
Metro Detroit Professional Health
Services Division of State of Israel Bonds
at its Maimonides Tribute Dinner,
Tuesday, Oct. 19, 6 p.m., at
Congregation Shaarey Zedek Southfield.
Drs. Lester and
Silverstone will each be
presented with the State of
Israel Maimonides Award
in recognition of their
contributions to the med-
ical profession, the State of
Israel and the Detroit
community. Nolan Finley,
editor of the Detroit News
editorial page, will be the
guest speaker.
Dr. Lester serves the
community as founder
Silverstone and director, Louis M.
Elliman Vascular Research
Foundation; trustee and
board of directors, Karmanos Cancer
Institute; vice chairman of the board, J.P.
McCarthy Foundation; board of
trustees, America's Thanksgiving Parade
and board of directors, Detroit
Symphony Orchestra and Michigan
Chapter, American Heart Association.
Dr. Silverstone has served the commu-
nity as a Dale Carnegie instructor from
1970 through 1980. He has participated
in the Thanksgiving Day Parade as a
member of the Parade Clown Corps for
many years.
