Palestinians.
Whatever one thinks of the current
administration, it was not George W
Bush who murdered 3,000 civilians on
9-11; and it was not George Bush who
is planning future mass civilian attacks
on the United States; he is not the
enemy. The self-declared enemy is a
large, sophisticated, amorphous force to
whom mass murder and total rejection
of accommodation are religiously dictat-
ed principles.
It is this same enemy that has been
the State of Israel's existential threat
since her birth in 1948. Israel has offi-
cially called for a Palestinian state in
1947, 1948, 1974, 1993 and 2000. The
Palestinian response has been consistent:
no recognition whatsoever of Israel's
very right to exist. If Michael Moore
believes that Israel does indeed have this
right, then he must consider the follow-
ing points:
• As a non-Muslim, Michael Moore is
religiously considered the infidel by this
enemy, his death religiously command-
ed. Moore's criticism of American policy
would preserve him in the eyes of this
enemy just like distinguished military
service in World War I preserved
German Jews under the Nazis — zero.
• This religiously commanded hatred
is the same enemy that faces Israel, and
it is incredulous that Moore is blind to
it. In both cases, this enemy refuses all
accommodation with the non-Muslim
(re: the infidel), negates the non-
Muslim's very right to live (let's not even
talk about sovereign political rights), sees
and glorifies holy war and martyrdom as
essential and God-commanded and
seeks to murder the maximum number
of civilians.
• This is an enemy that sanctifies the
death of its own civilians to "martyr-
dom" (we call it capital murder), who
jubilantly collects body parts for display
after horrific explosions. One can say
that these are internal affairs. If "only"
internal, so be it; but why then would
Michael Moore strongly critique Israel,
an imperfect, but well-established
democracy, in favor of regimes that
would be personally dangerous to him if
they possibly could?
• Much worse, however, is the reality
that both Israel and we as individuals
must face: the above described Arab
world orientation is not meant to
remain internal. Facile criticism of a
nation fighting for its survival against an
uncompromising enemy is exactly that
— facile and self-defeating.
(Writer's note: A similar letter was sent
to Michael Moore who has yet to respond.)

Kerry A Risk

In response to Other Views writer
Emery Klein's piece ("Kerry Best For
Israel," Aug. 20, page 31), it is true, as
many Kerry supporters contend, that
John Kerry has regularly joined in bipar-
tisan support of Israel. But while he has
ridden the congressional train in sup-
port of Israel, he has never been the
conductor.
During 20 years in the U.S. Senate,
John Kerry has a consistent record of
voting for Israel and a consistent record
of not being an original co-sponsor —
i.e., a leader — on even one piece of
pro-Israel legislation. Not one piece in 20
years. Kerry has been a reliable follower,
but never a reliable leader.
During the primaries, Kerry told the
Arab-American Institute that Israel's
defensive barrier was an "obstacle to
peace." A few weeks later, he changed
his tune in a talk before a Jewish audi-
ence. But why the flip-flop on an issue
anyone concerned about Israeli security
should have known about?
In contrast, President Bush under-
stands that America and Israel have a
common fate in the battle against
Islamist terrorism and Arab fascism.
Bush has stood strongly with Israel in
the face of terrorism, threats and intense
political pressure. Bush has treated Israel
as an ally, rather than as a bargaining
chip.
As the leader of the free world in a
post 9-11 America, President Bush has
earned our trust while Kerry has earned
our doubts. Sure, Kerry has the rhetoric;
but Bush has the record.
There are already too many risks out
there that threaten the United States
and Israel, and the shared values we
cherish and protect. Kerry is another
risk that we just don't need.

Kerry For President

During this political season, I hear with
regularity that the Bush administration
is "good for Israel." The unstated follow-
up is that John Kerry will not be.
Here are some key excerpts from
Senator Kerry's Position Paper on Israel,
dated June 21, 2004:
• Supports Israel's right to self-
defense, including actions against
Hamas, Islamic Jihad and other terror-
ist groups. Supports the construction of
Israel's security fence as an act of self-
defense, believing it is not a matter for
