These programs all work collaboratively resulting in a seamless
transition when an individual needs to move from one service to
another. When appropriate, referrals flow between these programs
at Jewish Home and Aging Services and JVS and the other COJES
agencies: Jewish Family Service, the JCC and Jewish Apartments
and Services. If you, a relative or friend can benefit from any of

these services, you are invited to call:

Nature Walks and Gardens: Don't overlook the simple
pleasures. A 10-15 minute walk can work wonders because it is
good exercise and reduces anxiety. The walk can be even more
therapeutic if the person interacts with nature. Gardening pro-
motes physical activity, enhances self-esteem and helps people feel
useful and productive. People with angry feelings find relief
through physical gardening activities. Adaptive tools are available
to make the work easier.
Advise for easy planning: You can have a successful outing

or outdoor activity, if you plan well. Even when you add an activi-
ty to their usual day, stick to the rest of the individual's routine. The
person with dementia may not know if it's too hot outside, so
encourage them to drink fluids. When planning an outing, call
ahead to make sure facilities are accessible and parking and rest-
rooms are nearby. Your options are open for summer activities, if
you focus on the person's past interests and strengths, rather than
limitations. ■
