Summer activities
Enjoy the great outdoors: Making summer months pleas-
urable for your family member with dementia can be a challenge.
However, with a little planning and creativity, it is possible to enjoy
walking, sports and other outdoor activities. There is a direct ben-
efit to the human spirit to being outdoors; the summer atmos-
phere feeds the senses and stimulates the brain. Exercise can
enhance strength, flexibility and balance.
Adapt summer activities to the person's abilities: Look at
the person's past hobbies or recreation. If you encourage an activ-
ity the person enjoyed in the past such as walking, swimming or
dancing, it is likely they will benefit from it now. Keep their likes
and dislikes in mind, but don't be afraid to try new things.
Summer activities can range from brief walks to picnics and boat
trips. If someone can no longer engage in a favorite sport, they
may still enjoy watching a tennis match or baseball game.
