Prentis and Meer Jewish Apartments, the Jewish Community Center, Jewish Family Service, JVS, Jewish Home and Aging Services and Fleischman Residence. Many volunteers and staff members at those locales helped with the sewing and finishing touches. Neither group saw the other's squares before the quilt was completed, but they meld together seamlessly. The Israeli panels, created in the Central Galilee's Emek Yizrael, Migdal HaEmek and Nazareth Illit, depict many of the same themes — physical therapy, music, friendship and holiday celebrations. "The fact that Jewish seniors made it from all over shows we are one," said Birdie Barris, 91, another Hechtman resident. "I think it's magnificent," said 83- year-old Mae Davidson, a resident of the Meer Jewish Apartments. The women who helped create the quilt all see different things when they look at the finished product. "The warmth of the heart and the dedication" are what stand out to Gertrude Weintraub, a Fleischman res- ident who has a large extended family in Israel. She hopes some of her rela- tives there will get to see the quilt. "It's like a time capsule of who we are as a community," Barris said. Other participants said the quilt rep- resents life, hope and the fact that eld- erly residents are creative, productive members of society. Meredith Goldberg, a nurse with J-Care, was moved. "I had tears in my eyes. It was just breathtaking to see it completed," she said. The quilt will be unveiled publicly at Federation's annual meeting Sept. 21. Then, it will be displayed at the Janice Charach Epstein Gallery at the JCC in West Bloomfield from Oct. 14-Nov. 25. It also will travel to Israel so the participants there can see the fruits of their labor. The women who took part in this project relish the idea that their cre- ation will be passed on from genera- tion to generation. "It's a part of us," said Ida Waksberg, who lives at Fleischman. "It's a lasting gift, made with love, for anyone who sees it." ❑ MAY THE NEW YEAR BRING HEALTH AND HAPPINESS TO ALL OUR FRIENDS Carri Goldring Laurie G.
