drive through the area,
which includes
Congregations Chaye
Olam and Beth Ahm
and Temple Beth El.
"Depending on where
you're coming from,
leave early and avoid
Lahser Road," he said.
The township has
told residents several
times about the impact
of the Ryder Cup on
parking. But to target
the Jewish community,
it agreed to share the
cost of a full-page ad in
this issue of the Jewish
News. The ad speaks to the wishes of
the township government, township
police, Anti-Defamation League and
Jewish Community Council for all
Jewish families to "share the joy and
solemnity of the holiday"
The ad grew out of an Aug. 31 meet-
ing involving Payne, Bloomfield
Township Police Chief Jeffrey Werner,
JCCouncil Executive Director David
Gad-Harf and Betsy Kellman, executive
director of the township-based ADL
Michigan Region.
"We pleaded our case, knowing that
families in the area would be having
children, grandchildren, parents and
friends over for dinner," Kellman said.
"Hosts may know the Ryder Cup event
is coming but may not necessarily put
two and two together until they are
forced to say, 'Oh, my God. Where will
everyone park?'"
Kellman said the township officials
"understood that families get together
during this solemn time of the year, but
they would not budge."
"Not wanting to appear insensitive,"
she said, "they agreed to share the cost
of an ad."
So far, Kellman has received just one
complaint about the parking ban dur-
ing Rosh Hashanah. The JN also
received one complaint.
Neal Barnett is the only Jewish
trustee on the Bloomfield Township
board; he lives near Oakland Hills. He
also attended the Aug. 31 meeting.
He felt township officials "were very
sensitive to the importance of Rosh
Hashanah." He echoed their explana-
tion that "the safety and security of resi-
dents and those attending the Ryder
Cup matches" is "the paramount con-
cern of the township."
Barnett cited the "Ryder Cup: Traffic,
Transportation & Parking" brochure as
one example of a prior township com-
munication. (See
www.bloomfieldtvvp.org)

Temple Beth El, at
Telegraph and 14 Mile
in Bloomfield
Township, is about 1.5
miles from Oakland
Hills.
"Only people with a
Beth El High Holiday
parking pass will be
allowed to park in our
lot," said Rabbi Daniel
Syme. Passes have been
distributed with the
temple's High Holiday
tickets.
Maple will be closed
from Lahser to
Comerica Bank, just
east of Telegraph, for Ryder Cup week.
And since the Maple-Telegraph inter-
section is apt to be a bottleneck, Rabbi
Syme suggested that Beth El ticket-
holders coming from west or east might
find it easier to access 14 Mile via
Franklin and Inkster roads.
"I've gotten no complaints about our
parking policy," Rabbi Syme said.
"Most people are just grateful we're
addressing the issue aggressively."
He added, "Obviously, I wouldn't
have wanted the Ryder Cup matches on
those dates for a variety of reasons, but
we're faced with reality and we're deal-
ing with it."
If it weren't for the tragic events of 9-
11, the Ryder Cup matches would have
been held last year on the last weekend
of September, after the High Holidays,
said Andy Odenbach, Ryder Cup tour-
nament director.
"In 2001, the Ryder Cup matches
were supposed to take place the follow-
ing week after 9-11 in Europe, but the
matches were postponed for one year,"
he said. "This had severe implications
for all future Ryder Cup matches.
"When everything was worked out
with [television] networks, schedules
and contracts we had with hotels, and
everything else involved, the last week
in September didn't work out in 2004
and the dates were changed."
Supervisor Payne urges anyone with
specific questions about parking on
Rosh Hashanah to contact the
Bloomfield Township Police
Department.
We ll try to work out alternatives
depending on the circumstances,"
Payne said. We may have specific sug-
gestions that could provide some assis-
tance or relief.
"It's in our interest to make it work
for everybody" El
