Sweet Times

As we celebrate 350 years of Jewish
life in America (1654-2004), let us
look closer to home and reinforce our
commitment as a community to a
range of pivotal communal issues:
Jewish education, Federation's Annual
Campaign, senior needs, social servic-
es, Israel advocacy, immigrant accul-
turation, inclusivity, youth groups,
campus life, synagogues, the unaffiliat-
ed.
Let us resolve in the new Jewish
year of 5765 to refocus and recharge
our efforts to making the Detroit and
Ann Arbor Jewish communities the
best that they can be, embracing our
successes, addressing our failures and
setting a reasoned course of action to

support needs and causes that we
believe in.
May 5765 be a good and sweet
year. The new year begins Wednesday
night, Sept. 15

"Once we have welcomed the intermarried into
our congregations, it is our responsibility to help
increase their Jewish commitment. Rather than
just be 'inviting,' we must also focus on what we
are inviting them to do. Our goal is to create
Jewish families, raise Jewish children, create a
dynamic Jewish life."
— Rabbi Jerome M. Epstein, executive vice presi-
dent, United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism,
quoted in the fall United Synagogue Review.
