Wake-Up Call

After a bout with prostate cancer, Mandy Patinkin
takes time to smell the roses.

EIRIK KNUTZEN

I

And, perhaps for the first time in his
adult life, Patinkin is completely free to
make his own choices backed by his best
friend and wife of 24 years,
actress/writer Kathryn Grody.
Their sons, Isaac and Gideon, are in
college on the East Coast, but the whole
family is racking up millions of frequent
flyer miles visiting each other for special
occasions such as birthdays and occa-
sional holidays — especially with
enough time to go skiing at British
Columbia's Whistler Mountain.

want all men over 50 to get a DRE
(digital rectal exam) every year —
and if there is a family history of
colon cancer, start at the age of 40,"
thundered Mandy Patinkin, a man diag-
nosed with prostate cancer toward the
end of the black comedy-inventive
drama series Dead Like Me last season.
In mid-May, he underwent surgery at
New York's famed Memorial Sloan-
Kettering Cancer Center;
by mid-June, he was back
in the saddle shooting seg-
ments in Vancouver,
British Columbia, Canada,
for Dead Like Me's new
season.
"They got it at a very
early stage, so I won't need
chemotherapy or radia-
don," boomed Patinkin.
"I'm recovering nicely, I'm
back to work and I'm
enjoying the company of
my fellow actors on Dead
Like Me. Medical science
has been very good to me
and I'll live forever."
Ironically, the close brush
with total disaster served as
a wake-up call for Patinkin,
who portrays Rube, a dead
man with lots of human
flaws in Dead Like Me.
"It's funny, because the
cancer ended up as the
greatest gift in the world.
First of all, I'm unbeliev-

that I didn't have it bad and
they got it all. And there
are some profound personal changes.
He loved the unorthodox pilot script
"I'm now in a place where I want to
for Dead Like Me because Rube is a very
pull back a bit and enjoy my life a little
more," he continued, laughing. "Taking
dead Grim Reaper with a sense of
a lesson from the show, I've stopped

sets. Time with my family is simply
"Rube is trying to teach George how
incredible. I've been running since I was
to live, not how to die," Patinkin said.
