Federation Sets High Goal

Given an overwhelming increase in
Jewish community needs and requests
for help both locally and overseas, the
leadership of the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit has set an aggres-
sive goal of $35 million for its 2005
Annual Campaign drive.
The campaign is the central fund-
raising appeal on behalf of 18 local
agencies, promoting the health, educa-
tion, culture and identity of the Detroit
Jewish community. Additionally, almost
40 cents of every dollar raised is allocat-
ed overseas to support Jewish commu-
nities in distress in Israel, in Eastern
Europe and in countries around the
world.
The goal of $35 million was
announced and unanimously approved
by the boards of the Federation and the
United Jewish Foundation in a recent
meeting. Last year's goal also was $35
million, but the campaign has not
closed for the year, said Andrew Echt of
the Federation.
This year's goal includes a separate
Challenge Fund of $4 million.
Established by the Jean and Samuel
Frankel family, the Challenge Fund will
match dollar-for-dollar all new gifts and
increases to the campaign. The
Challenge Fund will be used to address
the most critical needs of families here
in the Detroit area as well as in Israel.
A minimum of $1.2 million from the
Challenge Fund is proposed to main-
tain current levels of funding to local
agencies. Through the Challenge Fund,
Federation also plans to sustain its sup-
port to important overseas initiatives as
well as some of the emergency pro-
grams launched in Israel over the past
three years.
Working in partnership for their sec-
ond year at the helm of Federation's
Annual Campaign are co-chairs Marta
Rosenthal of Franklin and Michael
Horowitz of West Bloomfield.
"Our goal is aggressive, but our cur-
rent resources are stretched to the
limit," Rosenthal said. "If we do noth-
ing more than match last year's achieve-
ment, we would face a 3 percent cut in
support to our agencies. Given the
overwhelming flood of needs in this
community, a reduced allocation is a
decision we do not want to face. These
concerns are mirrored by vulnerable
populations overseas and in Israel, par-
ticularly new immigrants and youth-at-
risk.
"The Detroit Jewish community has
always been there. With our history of
commitment, there's no doubt that we
can rise to the challenge in 2005 as
well."
