Beth El Hosts Picnic

On Sunday, Sept. 12, Temple Beth
El will host a picnic on the temple
grounds from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m..
The picnic will feature food, a live
deejay, moonwalks, miniature golf,
obstacle course, face painting, tattoos,
and arts and crafts as well as an oppor-
tunity to meet the temple's new direc-
tor of education, Keren Packman
Alpert.
Everything is free, including a raffle.
Sponsoring the day are the temple affil-
iates, Family Circle, Sisterhood,
Brotherhood, Beth Elders and the
Young People's Society plus the Prentis
Family Fund. For information, call

Judaic Course At OU

Rabbi Dannel Schwartz of Temple
Shir Shalom will teach "Introduction to
Judaism" in the College of Arts and
Sciences at Oakland University in
Rochester this fall.
The course will be offered Tuesdays
from 6:30-9:50 p.m. Individuals may
enroll on a continuing education basis.

Learn On Mondays

Congregation Sha2rey Zedek's Jewish
high school program is now under the
direction of Marc Kay and has new
travel opportunities for students.
These include: Chicago Experience
for ninth-graders, Habitat for
Humanity Experience for 11th-graders
(during February break), a Washington,
D.C., trip for 12th-graders and a ski
retreat at Crystal Mountain up North
for grades 8-12. These are in addition
to the eighth-grade trip to Washington,
D.C., and the confirmation (10th-
grade) trip to New York City.

B'nai Moshe Hosts Classes

The Kolel Moshe Lifelong Learning
Institute of Congregation B'nai Moshe
has announced additional classes on
High Holiday themes.
"Doing the Work of Teshuvah —

taught by Barry Levine 7-9 p.m.
Thursday, Sept. 9.
A "Machzor Mark-Up" will be
offered 10-11:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept.
12. Participants will annotate their hol-

Leadership Weekend Slated

Rabbi Moshe Edelman will bring to
the membership of Adat Shalom a mes-
sage about effective synagogue leader-
ship, "From
Strength to
Stren
Preparing Adat
Shalom for the
Future," at the
synagogue's Sept.
10-12 leadership
weekend.

Judaism, will explore issues with mem-
bers of the board of trustees, leaders of
the affiliates, committee chairpersons,
clergy and staff
He will address the congregation at
Shabbat morning services on the sub-
ject of "Jewish Learning, Jewish Living,
Jewish Leading."
Also included in the weekend will be
a Kabbalat Shabbat service at 6 p.m. on
Friday evening, a leadership Shabbat
dinner and Shabbat luncheon, and a
Sunday workshop for board of trustees
members.
Chairs of the weekend are Murray
Sittsamer, Julie Teicher and Joyce B.
Weingarten.

High Holiday Services Set

The Grosse Pointe Jewish Council will
hold High Holiday services for Rosh
Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
Led by Rabbi Nicolas Behrmann
with cantorial soloist Bryant Frank, the
services will celebrate Rosh Hashanah on
the evening of Wednesday, Sept. 15, and
the morning of Thursday, Sept. 16.
For Yom Kippur, services will be held
on the evening of Friday, Sept. 24 and
throughout the day of Saturday, Sept.
25. On both holidays there will be spe-
cial children's services.
The Grosse Pointe Jewish Council
works to preserve and promote Jewish
heritage, tradition and culture on metro
Detroit's east side, while offering an edu-
cational and social forum for its mem-
bers.

rofessor Lawrence H. Schiffman
is a specialist in the Dead Sea
Scrolls and Judaism in Late
Antiquity. Chairman of NYU's Skirball
Department of Hebrew and Judaic Studies,
Professor of Hebrew and Judaic Studies and
member of its Center for Near Eastern
Studies. He's published many books and
more that 150 articles on the Dead Sea
Scrolls and Rabbinic Judaism.

He was featured in the PBS Nova series,
"Secrets of the Dead Sea Scrolls," four
BBC documentaries, the McNeil-Lehrer
