ndrea Rae's debut engagement at Carnegie Hall turned into an identity-altering
experience. Appearing in 1999 under her birth name, Andrea Markowicz, she
entered the building, announced her name and was told there was a special
dressing room and extravagant provisions awaiting her.
The person at the door, the singer-actress understood, apparently thought she was
Andrea Marcovicci, a headliner in the Noel Coward Centennial Celebration, and not
Andrea Markowicz, a member of the ensemble.
The identities were clarified before the headliner arrived.
"I instantly felt there needed to be a difference between the two of us so I decided
to use my middle name, Rae, as my last name," the University of Michigan vocal
performance graduate explains. "Our names sounded way too similar."
Now comfortable with her choice for what she hopes eventually will be seen on
venue marquees, Rae is listed as part of the ensemble in Camelot, which runs
Sept. 8-12 at the Fisher Theatre and stars Robert Goulet as King Arthur. Her
voice can be heard in "The Lusty Month of May," "The Jousts" and "Madrigal."
