Jerry Soverinsky:
"If I had a clime
for even time
I had to check a
map in front of
a 15th-centug
church, I'd be
rich."
"The ugliest day in Switzerland beats the prettiest day on
the slaughterhouse line at Tyson foods," quips the author.

"Easily joins the list of Detroit's culinary treasures."

through the U.S. and Europe and later
taking college students through France
and Luxembourg," he says. "I began
Wayne State University Law School,
but I decided law wasn't for me — and
I started my bike touring company
instead. I picked Chicago because it's
just a fun place to live." (CBT stands
for College Bicycle Tours, but the firm
now handles all types of travel.)
Neither Soverinsky nor any of his
biker customers have suffered any
serious injury during his European
trips, and he doesn't favor any one
brand of bike over another. "We just
arrive in a country, rent bikes and
off we go," he says. "I've suffered
more broken bones and things in
Chicago than on any of my trips.
"All of this travel in Europe has been
a great opportunity to escape a traffic-
jammed, television-marathon lifestyle
to experience life at a more deliberate
pace," Soverinsky says. "By concen-
trating on Europe for the book, I don't
mean to disparage the United States.
I'm a fiercely proud American. I just
enjoy cycling through Europe." ❑
