But former Southfield resident Jerry Soverinsky has pedaled his bike into a full-blown career. For the past 18 years, Soverinsky, 39 and single, has hosted thousands of travelers on European bicycle tours, personally guiding about 100 trips. He even opened his own travel business in 1990, CBT Tours of Chicago. He employs 12 to 20 people, as needed, to take people on about 200 trips a year. Soverinsky, whose father and step- mother, Dr. Louis and Sally Soverinsky, live in Bloomfield Hills, now has turned his cycling experiences into a book, Cycle Europe: 20 Tours, 12 Countries (MBI Publishing Co.; $19.95). It's a comprehensive and informative guide to touring Europe — taking readers, travelers and riders into some of the most charming areas of the continent. Not focused on just one region or country, the 393-page book compiles 20 of Soverinsky's favorite tours. He provides details of seven-to-10-day trips in 12 countries — Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, England, France, Germany, Holland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Scotland and Switzerland — including route descriptions, notable landmarks, historical overviews, food and lodging to suit any budget, and sightseeing ideas. He also offers tips on renting, pack- ing, necessary equipment and first aid. Illustrating all of these are numerous maps, photos and charts. And he throws in his personal, often humor- ous, travel anecdotes and tidbits along the way. How does it feel to spend about half of your life riding a bike through Europe? "If I had a dime for every time I had to check a map in front of a 15th-century church, I'd be rich," Soverinsky muses, adding, "Nothing beats camping in Europe — except, of course, a nice hotel room."
