Detainee Conditions Poor
Washington/JTA — Conditions for
Palestinians in Israeli interrogation and
detention centers are poor, the U.S.
State Department said.
Answering a query last week about a
recent hunger strike by Palestinian pris-
oners, the department said it has found
that Israeli prisons meet international
standards but interrogation centers and
detention camps do not. It cited reports
by human rights groups describing
insufficient living space, torture and
inadequate medical care.
The State Department said the condi-
tions are part of "extensive" discussions
among Israel, the United States and the
international community. It said Israel
had pledged to provide all detainees a
bed, exercise, telephone and visitation
rights, and less crowded facilities.

U.S. Citizenship Revoked
A U.S. federal judge
New York/JTA
revoked the citizenship of a former Nazi
Germany concentration camp guard.
The government said Joseph Wittje, 84,
who lives in Illinois, served as a guard
with the SS Death's Head Guard battal-
ion at Sachsenhausen during the war —
and that he lied about his service when
he applied for U.S. citizenship in 1959.
Judge Suzanne Conlon canceled Wittje's
certificate of naturalization and ordered
him to turn it over to the attorney gen-
eral.

In addition to Israel's pledge 18 years
ago following the Jonathan Pollard
affair to refrain from espionage in the
United States, there is the reality of
an extensive and strong U.S.-Israel
relationship. U.S., American Jewish
organizational and Israeli officials
legally and officially consult and share
information often on a wide range of
issues, including security expertise,
terrorism, militant Islam and rogue
states.
