Digest Frankel Earns Butzel Award Philanthropist and real estate developer Stanley Frankel of Bloomfield Hills has been named the recipient of Federation's 2004 Fred M. Butzel Award in recogni- tion of his longstand- ing service to the com- munity. Recognized as the highest honor the Detroit Jewish com- munity can bestow upon its leaders, "the Butzel" will be present- Frankel ed to Frankel at the combined annual rrLeeting of the Jewish Federation and the United Jewish Foundation 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21 at Adat Shalom Synagogue. A member of Federation's Board of Governors since 1969 and longstanding member of its executive committee, Frankel serves as chair of Federation's Joint Fiscal Oversight Council. He has accompanied hundreds of Detroiters on missions to Israel, and served as the leader of Federation's first "Koach Detroit" Mission to Israel and Eastern Europe in 1985. He is a past president of Federation's Young Adult Division as well as the national United Jewish Appeal's Young Leadership Cabinet. Frankel is a long-time and generous supporter of the University of Michigan, recipient of the 2000 Distinguished Alumni Award of the University of Michigan Business School and a past chairman of the board of trustees of the University of Michigan Hillel. Frankel holds the distinction of being a second-generation Butzel awardee, fol- lowing in the footsteps of his father, who received the award in 1984. A Sweet Celebration Apples and Honey, an annual Ann Arbor Jewish community event for fam- ilies that celebrates the fall Jewish holi- days, will take place on Sunday, Sept. 12, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center of Washtenaw County, 2935 Birch Hollow Drive. Irwin Weingarten and Rachel Portnoy, JCC board members, are the co-chairs of this free program. Participants will be able to taste apples and honey, symbols for a sweet new year. There will be children's activities, shofar blowing and arts and crafts. New to Apples and Honey this year will be strolling entertainment, magicians, jug- glers, a petting zoo and pony rides. Clowns will be face painting and mak- ing balloon animals as well as entertain- ing guests. Israeli food and kosher baked goods will be available for purchase along with gifts and Judaica items. Members of the JCC and federation boards will be welcoming newcomers. To highlight Jewish organizations in the community, paper cards will be stamped for those new to the area at each organization's booth. A special Rosh Hashanah gift will be given to those who have their card fully stamped. Holocaust Course Offered Madonna University in Livonia will offer the course "Holocaust: Issues and Themes in the Genocide of European Jewry" on Thursdays from 4 to 7 p.m., beginning Sept. 9.
