T

o show support and affection
for the State of Israel, nearly a
thousand community members
attended Eretz Yisrael Day (Land of
Israel Day) at Temple Israel on Aug. 29.
Throughout the damp, cloudy day, a
steady stream of people shopped from
Israeli artists, heard speakers, collected
information about ways to help Israel,
enjoyed Israel foods and visited with
friends.
A hit were tables filled with Israeli
products carried at Hiller's Markets.
Many free samples included candies and
a variety of olives. Special activities for
children included making Jewish stars in
the arts and crafts room, which had facts
about Israel decorating the walls and a
large Israeli walking map.
After nominal bills to stage the event
are paid, 10 percent of all sales, plus 100
percent of sales from a special T-shirt,
will go to the Meals for Children pro-
gram of Meir Panim-Power of Giving,
an Israeli network of humanitarian serv-
ices. The program provides hot meals to
7,000 needy youngsters daily. Temple
Israel's sisterhood and Israel committee
hosted the event.
Also, about 500 people attended a
briefing about the upcoming Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit
Family Mission in 2005.
Robert Koby of Farmington Hills

came to "help the vendors and see
friends and encourage them to buy
things."
"With what's going on in Israel, we
should stand by Israel," he said, noting
that among his more than a dozen trips
to Israel, recent trips included volunteer-
ing through Sar-El (Volunteers for
Israel) to help the Israeli Defense Forces
(IDF) and to assist an Israeli business-
man who needed some help.
"It's nice to be able to buy a few
things, "he said, "but people should go
to Israel. That way, they can support
them [economically] and they can be
there, too."
Event co-chair Carol Lynn Cooper
said, "It was so great. It far exceeded our
expectations. We couldn't believe the
support from the community. It was so
nice to see a room full of people I didn't
know."
Ari Levine, a West Bloomfield teenag-
er active in Young Judaea, spent the day
with other teens selling T-shirts,
bracelets with the names of terrorism
victims and trying to interest others in
the activities and camps of the Zionist
youth group sponsored by Hadassah.
A young Israel advocate, Levine looks
forward to being in Israel for his first
time next year. He came to Eretz Yisrael
Day for the same reason he plans to visit
Eretz Yisrael next summer:
"It's good to know where you belong,"
he said.
