he September Atlantic magazine
includes an interesting article
called "The Hollywood
Campaign," about the big givers to the
Democrats in a land overflowing with
glitz and money: www.theadantic.com/

doc/200409/alterman
As one might expect, quite a few of
the featured "players" are Jewish —
including ROB REINER, mogul
DAVID GEFFEN and, of course,
BARBRA STREISAND. While a seri-
ous article, the most entertaining sec-
tion is on Seinfeld co-creator and Curb
Your Enthusiasm Jewish star LARRY
DAVID and his wife, LAURIE
DAVID.
The Davids' per-
sonalities seem a lot
like the fictional
Davids depicted in
Curb. (Laurie David,
however, is Jewish,
unlike Larry's TV
wife.) Larry is a cur-
mudgeon who tacit-
Larry David:
ly supports, but
Curmudgeon.
stands apart from,
his wife's straight-
ahead enthusiasm for environmental
activism and liberal politics.
He notes he never heard Laurie talk
about the environment until his Seinfeld
earnings made her a rich woman. (She
retorts, "I want to thank my husband,
whose disdain for mankind has allowed
me to work on its behalf.")
Larry's only professional advice about
her public speaking? "Not so Jewish."
As for his new Toyota Prius, a hybrid
gas-electric car — Larry denies buying
it to please his activist wife:
"The Prius is the only car that didn't
have that console in the way, which
gives you more legroom. That's why I
bought it. I liked the legroom and I
liked the way it looked. The gas mileage
was last on my list. If anybody says I
bought it for [Laurie], I'll punch them
in the mouth."

FRED SAVAGE, 28, the former star of
the Wonder Years, married JENNIFER
STONE, 31, a real estate broker who
was a childhood friend, on Aug. 7. The
couple lost touch when Savage moved
from Chicago to Hollywood in 1988,
but met at a birthday party in 1999 and
sparks flew. ("We started talking and
smooching, and we've been together
ever since," Savage told People.)

Savage described Stone as "a nice
Jewish girl" in a 2001 interview with
the L.A. Jewish Journal, adding that this
was his first serious relationship.
Fred Savage was raised in an obser-
vant Jewish home and was tutored for
his bar mitzvah by a Wonder Years pro-
ducer who was a former rabbinical stu-
dent. In recent years, Savage has gradu-
ated from Stanford, appeared in a few
films (Austin Powers) and has done a lot
of TV directing.

In recent same-day articles on their
respective Jewish baseball heroes, the
Boston Herald and L.A. Times noted that
GABE KAPLER of the Red Sox and
SHAWN GREEN of the Dodgers are
"barraged by bar mitzvah invitations."
Green told the Times, "It's tough dur-
ing the season because there aren't too
many Jewish players, so everywhere we
go, the Jewish communities reach out
to us. We do what we can do."
Meanwhile, Kapler was just given the
honor of leading 2,000 teen competi-
tors in the "athlete's oath" at the Boston
Maccabiah Games.
Comedian ELAYNE BOOSLER
added a light touch to the Times piece:
"Native Americans don't want sports
teams named after them. I would like
to volunteer my people. We would love
the Atlanta Bravermans."

CARLY SIMON, the famous singer,
recently told Interview magazine: "It
didn't matter as much because I'm a
singer, not an actress, but my face is
more acceptable in a way now than
when I first came on the scene, because
I'm part black. My mother's mother was
black. I'm Jewish, black, Cuban and
French." To the best of my knowledge,
this is the first time that Simon has spo-
ken about her black ancestry.
Carly's "revelation" sheds light on her
parents' civil rights work. Her father
was the Jewish RICHARD SIMON, a
musically gifted man who was the co-
founder of the famous Simon and
Schuster publishing house. (The Simon
children were raised without religion.)
Carly's mother, Andrea, was a terrif-
ic singer and was involved in civil
rights work with Richard. The
Simons were great friends of Jackie
Robinson and helped smooth the way
in the 1950s so that the famous black
ballplayer could buy a home in the
"lily-white" suburbs. (Some of those
same suburbs were also keeping Jews
out.)
