The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer
Institute and Temple Israel's Rabbi
Jennifer Tisdale Kroll are offering a
faith-based support group for Jewish
cancer patients, survivors and family.
Nsiah: A Journey, will meet 7-8:30
p.m. for nine Tuesdays at the temple
beginning Sept. 21. There is no charge.
Participants will:
• Explore Jewish beliefs and practices
to help one feel in control
• Explore personal spirit building
• Identify
aspects of
Judaism
such
as prayer, ritual
and belief in God
— which provide
comfort and hope
• Reframe
negative thoughts
into positive ones
• Be supported
Kroll
by others living
through a similar
experience.
The group will be led by therapist
Brenda Beron and social worker Patricia
Milner Sachs, both cancer survivors.
Sessions will also address topics such
as uncertainty, helplessness, lack of con-
trol, the doctor-patient relationship,
treatment-related concerns, self- and
body-image, the effect illness has on
family, reordering life and personal goals,
social relationships and "Why me?"

Spiritual Cancer Support

Can Shalom Expands

The Gan Shalom Early Childhood pro-
gram at Congregation Beth Shalom has
been expanded. The program for chil-
dren 20 months to 2 1/2 years old, will
evolve around child-centered interests as
well as Judaic traditions and values.
Hours have been extended to 7:30
a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.
Lynn Breuer will continue her Parent
Tot Program 9:45-11 a.m. Tuesdays,
beginning Sept. 14. Parents will be
engaged with their child in play, music,
movement and art. She will discuss tod-
dler development and parenting.
Leah Kleiner has joined the staff She
has had experience.in teaching kinder-
garten with the Flint Public Schools and
counseling at Tamarack Camps.
Enrichment classes will continue in
such subjects as yoga, art, science and
photography. The Reggio Emilia philos-
ophy will be ideology
