No Sanctions In Judo

Athens/JTA
World judo's governing
body declined to penalize an Iranian
athlete who refused to compete against
an Israeli at the Athens Olympics.
Despite earlier statements by Iranian
officials that Arash Miresmaeili would
not fight Udi Vaks on Aug. 15 because
of Iran's political boycott of Israel, the
International Judo Federation accepted
the argument that Miresmaeili didn't
fight simply because he didn't make
weight.
Miresmaeili weighed in for the bout
more than 11 pounds over the 145-
pound limit, an extraordinary margin
for a double world champion. Iranian
officials then suggested giving
Miresmaeili a $150,000 prize for his
political stance.

A Pile Of Gold

Jerusalem/JTA
Israeli judo bronze
medalist Arik Ze'evi has been awarded a
full college scholarship.
After promising in June to grant
scholarships to two students of the
Interdisciplinary Center who would be
competing in the Olympic Games
should they return home with medals,
the center's president, Uriel Reichman,
made good this week.
Ze'evi, a third-year law and business
student, will receive a full ride toward
completing his studies. "For us, you
were always gold," Reichman said of
Ze'evi. The other student, also a judo
athlete, did not win a medal in Athens.

Paris Security Upped

enriching our community and planning our future.

Paris/JTA The mayor of Paris
announced that security would be
stepped up at Jewish institutions in the
capital.
Following the arson of an unoccu-
pied Jewish social center over the week-
end, Bertrand Delanoe said that addi-
tional video surveillance cameras would
be installed at buildings frequented by
the Jewish community, and that he
would ask the city council to increase its
security budget by a third to protect
Jewish institutions.
According to police sources, the fire
at the Rue Popincourt Center in Paris
destroyed the center, which was located
on the ground floor of a five-story
building. The center housed a commu-
nity soup kitchen. Police found anti-
Semitic inscriptions on two refrigerators
in the building as well as a burned-out
motor scooter, which they believe to be
the source of the suspected arson.
French President Jacques Chirac con-
demned the attack.
