Growing up in a town with few Jews,
Bowen Vernan, 17, has spent his high
school years creating his own Jewish envi-
ronment — including traveling 45-min-
utes from his home to attend Irnai B'rith
Youth Organization chapter meetings
once or twice a week. Right from the
start, Bowen got involved not only with
his chapter, but also his BBYO region,
holding regional board positions and
receiving BBYO's $1,000 Matthew
Doren Leadership Scholarship.

Why drive from Grand Blanc to metro
Detroit to participate in BBYO?
"Up until about seventh grade, my
family and I weren't active in the Jewish
community at all. I was the only Jewish
student in my charter school and we
decided we needed to become involved
with other Jewish families. So I attended
Ivriah, the Jewish Sunday school in
Flint, was bar mitzvahed and confirmed.
Since eighth grade, I have been home-
schooled [in secular studies]. Two years
ago, I joined BBYO, which has given
me the opportunity to become best
friends with fellow Jewish teenagers."

How did you use the Matthew Doren
Leadership Scholarship, named in
memory of a BBYO chapter president?
"I was able to attend the BBYO
International Kallah 2004, a three-week
program at BBYO's Camp Perlman in
Starlight, Pa. At Kallah, a wide range of
Jewish educators helped participants
explore their Judaism and learn more
about themselves."

your BBYO region?

[newspaper editor]. Now I am the 2004-
05 regional shaliach, responsible for
Judaism, community service-social
action as well as helping Windsor and
Ann Arbor chapters. Last summer, I

However, I know that many of my clos-
