Q: Did you know that you can be
Jewish and Christian at the same time?
A: A "Jew for Jesus" is as absurd as a
"Christian for Buddha" and as ridiculous
as "kosher pork." The fact that some of
the first Christians were Jews didn't
make them right. Their movement died
out within three centuries as the church
became a gentile institution.

Q: Do you have a personal relationship
with God?
A: Every Jew has a personal relation-
ship with God because we all possess a
divine nesharnah (soul). All we need to
do is turn to God with a sincere heart
and this will reawaken our intrinsic spir-
itual closeness to God. Prayer, Torah
study and loving-kindness are the spirij
tual means to approach Him.

Countering
Evangelism

Jews for Jesus will be using "street
evangelism" and other techniques dur-
ing its Behold Your God Detroit cam-
paign. Volunteers will approach people
in a public place and try to start con-
versations, perhaps using-leaflets. The
JCCouncil offers these suggestions for
dealing with JFJ volunteers:
• Do not engage in conversation.
Their first goal is to start a conversa-
tion with you. They will count this as
a "contact," which they will use to
raise money.
• Do not try to debate them theo-
logically, biblically or in any other
way. JFJ volunteers have undergone
hours of training to learn their trade.
They can usually quote the Bible,
although they often use incorrect or
deceptive interpretations.
• If you do decide to talk to them,
be careful not to get frustrated or
angry. Bystanders will be watching and
a disturbance may pique their curiosi-
ty, thus helping JFJ.
• Never resort to violence of any
sort. Not only is this counter to Jewish
values, but also JFJ has filed lawsuits
against people who have pushed or
otherwise assaulted. their volunteers.

JCCouncil at (248) 642-5393.
