WHAT ARE YOUR PICKS for the BEST OF the JEWISH NEWS Readers' Choice Awards? Judaism. Still, it's hard not to like The Only One Club. It is a story about the importance of individuality and understanding differ- ences. As the book begins, Jennifer's first- grade class is making Christmas deco- rations. Jennifer announces, "I'm Jewish. I celebrate Hanukah." (Unfortunately, there's absolutely nothing else about what the holiday celebrates — not even a one-word sen- tence.) Since Jennifer is the only Jewish child in the class, her teacher, Mrs. Matthews, suggests she make Chanukah decorations instead. That night, Jennifer tells her parents about what happened at school, then decides to make up "The Only One Club," of which she is the only mem- ber. She creates a circle button with glitter, with her club name right in the middle, and wears it to school the next day. Predictably, all the other children want to be members of "The Only One Club." One boy insists he should be a member because he's the only one in the class with red hair; a girl says she should be allowed to join because she's the only Illustrated by doff titter% by dare Na00f one whose last name is that of a bird. Written for young children, The Only One Club features terrific pic- tures, bright and snappy. And even if the message is nothing new, in a world filled with intolerance and hatred, it's a message we could all do with hearing again and again. 0 Are You Puzzled?
