Paperback. 24 pages. $4.95.
This book is something like the first
runner-up in the Miss America con-
test. It's good, it's worthy, and it will
do if for any reason a first-place candi-
date is unable to fulfill its job. It's just
not quite the winner.
Jewish children have for years been
enjoying Sammy the Spider, whose
adventures have taken him through all
the Jewish holidays (Sammy Spider's
First Passover, First Purim, First Rosh
Hashanah, First Shabbat, First Tu
b'Shevat etc.).
The author clearly wants to stick
with a good thing, so she has intro-
duced a series of workbooks featuring
Sammy, as well. (After all, there are
only so many Jewish holidays for
Sammy to enjoy).
Sammy Spider's Israel Fun Book con-
sists of coloring and game activities for
very young children (think younger
than 5; no boy or girl older than this
is really going to be challenged by the
"Circle things that you wouldn't see in
the desert" game, featuring ice skaters
and penguins). The pictures are nicely
drawn and the ideas are usually cute
(Make a Sammy Out of Israeli Foods,
or Find Sammy's Face on the Fruit in
the Kibbutz Dining Hall).
The tiniest fans of Sammy will no
doubt have fun with this, but older
children, who still enjoy the Sammy
stories, should pass on the Israel Fun
Book.

From the first few pages you know
exactly what's going to happen in The
Only One Club. You're also going to
have to set reality aside to get through
this one. And it missed the boat on
the opportunity to teach a bit about
