course Sept. 3-6.
Instead of area Orthodox sin-
gles heading off to New York to meet
new people and enjoy a weekend away,
local singles will be hosting a Shabbaton
in Detroit and its suburbs for 25s-to-35s
from throughout North America.
Sponsored by Young Israel of Oak
Park and the Young Israel Metro
Council, the weekend will include:
• Friday night Shabbat dinner at
YIOP, with area host families invited to
an after-dinner oneg.
• Shabbat lunch on Saturday at the
host families' homes.
• Motivational talks and seminars
throughout the weekend with lawyer-
actor-Rabbi Moshe Bellows of New
York.
• A limousine road rally Saturday
night.
• The Ford Factory Tour and
Greenfield Village on Sunday
• Bowling on Sunday night.
• A goodbye breakfast on Monday.
The weekend is being planned by
YIOP's Esty Kleid and Zoya Mavashev.
Women at the synagogue had for
years been discussing hosting a singles
Shabbaton. The group included Kleid's

mother, Adell, of Oak Park. When a
new women's group, Evrat Nashim,
formed this year, Esty Kleid asked what
could be done for singles. The
Shabbaton, and her co-chairing, are the
result.
"There. are [single] people who go to
New York once a month" to visit friends
and make new ones, said Kleid, 25. "I
try to go every few months." She visits
her brother and friends "and I try to
have a date for the weekend." She is
fixed up by friends and by matchmakers.
This routine started when she was 18,
and has led to a few longer-term, long-
distance relationships.
The age range for the Shabbaton —
25-35 — was selected, Kleid said, because
there is more pressure on Orthodox sin-
gles to find a mate after their early 20s.
The YIOP members also want to
show New Yorkers and observant singles
from other areas that there is Orthodox
life outside the New York area. "We
want them to see our community,' said
Kleid, who works for the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit.
Participants in the Shabbaton will pay
$195 for the weekend events, and out-
of-towners will stay with host families. El
