makeshift dressing room for singer
Bonnie Raitt at a New York City
lounge.
One of the most important pictures is
that of R.L. Burnside making music
with his grandson, Cedric Burnside,
while his great-granddaughter and her
stepfather look on. This family photo-
graph underscores the notion of passing
the music on to the next generation.
Leibovitz, one of six children, studied
painting at the San Francisco Art
Institute. But a night course in photog-
raphy hooked her on a different medi-
um.
In 1969, she lived in Israel for a
semester as part of a work-study pro-
gram in which she worked on a kibbutz
and participated in an archaeological
dig at King Solomon's Temple.
While in Israel, her then boyfriend
gave her a subscription to Rolling Stone.
This proved prophetic when Leibovitz
knocked on the door of the magazine in
1970, with her portfolio in hand. One
of those pictures was a photograph of
ladders taken at Kibbutz Emir in 1969.
Leibovitz was hired and, within a
month, had a portrait of John Lennon
on the cover. In 1973, she became the
magazine's chief photographer. After
leaving Rolling Stone in 1983, Liebovitz
continued her fabled success at Vanity
Fair and Vogue. A number of Leibovitz's
picture stories were of Jewish celebrities,
including Bette Midler lying in a bed of
roses, Woody Allen posing in a pink-

tiled bathroom, and a younger, stream-
lined Jerry Lewis on the golf course.
The recipient of numerous awards,
Leibovitz is only one of two living pho-
tographers, and the first woman, to
have an exhibition at the Smithsonian's
National Portrait Gallery in
Washington, D.C., in 1991.
Leibovitz credits her own family pic-
tures as a major influence. Because the
family traveled a lot (her father was in
the U.S. Air Force), the family picture
album and the memories these photos
evoked were important in their lives.
For Leibovitz, her family pictures are
the touchstone of everything else she
has done.
Photographing without guile or senti-
ment, in mock humor or utter serious-
ness, what Leibovitz conveys most of all
is the utter humanity of her subjects. El
