The American Film Institute special
100 Greatest Movie Songs of All Time
Will be rebroadcast 8-11 p.m. Friday,
Aug. 13, on CBS.
Movie Songs got big ratings when it
first aired in June, and "Jewish spotters"
like me realized it was a "very Jewish"
show.
Jewish songwriters wrote or co-wrote
at least 63 of the 100 top songs. The
AFI show features the song as sung by
the original movie performer.
Look for BARBRA STREISAND
(four songs); BETTE MIDLER (two
songs); SIMON and GARFUNKEL;
and the delightful JULES MUNSHIN,
who sings "New York, New York (A

Phish, the very popular Vermont-based
rock band that attracted a fan following
similar to the old Grateful Dead, will
disband after a two-day Vermont con-
cert Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 14-15.
You can listen to the concert, live, on
various radio satellite subscription serv-
ices; look at a live feed on the Phish
Web site; or see a closed-circuit telecast
in select places (the UA Commerce 14
in Walled Lake is the only Michigan

Phish attracted a very large number of
young Jewish fans during its 21-year-
history, perhaps attracted by the band's
social conscience and Jewish song con-
tent. Their concerts regularly featured
"Yerushalayim Shel Zahav". ("Jerusalem
of Gold") and a hip, but still-in-Hebrew
version of "Avenu Malkenu."
This playlist is not surprising when
one learns that bassist and songwriter
MIKE GORDON is a graduate of
Solomon Schechter Day School in
Newton, Mass., and that band drurn-
mer, JON FISHMAN, also is Jewish.
The two non-Jewish guys in the band
learned to sing "Avenu Malkenu" from a
choral recording.

("Oliver Beene") has been cast as
JASON ALEXANDER'S wife-in the
upcoming CBS series Listen-Up, based
on the life of Washington Post sports-
