hirteen-year-old Shoshana
Krohner might not look that
tough, but try punching her
or grabbing her, and you'll find
yourself in a heap on the floor.
Krohner, a student at Beth Jacob
School for Girls in Oak Park, is one
of about 20 people of all ages, sizes
and backgrounds who wrap their
knuckles and train in Krav Maga
(contact combat), the Israeli form of
self-defense, at the Jewish
Community Center in West
Bloomfield.
"My mother saw it [offered] on a
bulletin board and told me about
it," said Shoshana, who takes the
class every Monday and Wednesday

with her sister, Esther, 16. "I decided
to exercise and learn how to defend
myself. I love it."
Krav Maga was developed in Israel
before the 1948 War of
Independence. The hand-to-hand-
combat system is taught not only to
Israeli soldiers, but also law enforce-
ment officers, airline pilots and civil-
ians in the United States and
Canada.
To call it a martial art would be
wrong, said instructor Jared Gross,
23, of Farmington Hills. "There's no
art, there's no tradition. This is
what's going to save you, this is what
works, and this will get you in
shape," said Gross, who comes from
a kickboxing background.
"It's a cold, hard world out there,
and people don't have the respect for
