How do the kids know about multiple
sclerosis (MS)?
"My cousin Kim in New Jersey has
MS. Paul and I learned about the gender
research project, which is a study of why
more women than men have MS. The
kids decided to donate to the project,
which Jacob said they chose so Kim can
get better."

Kudos: Young Donors

At ages 6 and 5, Jacob and Hayden
Shelton are already seasoned philanthro-
pists, continuously filling a tzedakah box
in their home to make contributions to
groups, from the firemen in New York
after 9-1 1 to Children's Hospital in
Corpus Christi, Texas, near their former
home.
Their most recent donation was to the
MS Society Michigan Chapter in
Southfield. The tzedakah box is already

Jacob and Hayden-' mom, Tracey
Shelton, recounts how the children became
young donors.

How do you feel about the lessons your
children are learning about giving?
"I don't think we do more than many
other Jewish families who are teaching
their children about the importance of
tzedakah. We're also happy how they've
learned about tzedakah at school at
Shaarey Zedek. I am really glad, though,
when I see that at such at young age
they realize how important it is." ❑

Because they're too young to have jobs,
how do the kids make money to
donate?
"They do little chores around the
house, like sweep the floor or help out-
side. Jacob brings the garbage cans in
each week. The kids put their coins —
along with any odd change we have
into their tzedakah box."

How much do they set aside to give to
charitable organizations?
"There's no specific amount they aim
for. When the can is filled, the kids help
sort the coins in piles of quarters, nick-
els, dimes and pennies and I roll it in
coin rollers I got from the bank. Jacob
helps count it and then we ask the kids
where they would like to donate the
money. Last time, there was $100 in the
box and they donated it to the MS
Society. Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, where

Bomb Ignited Near Jerusalem

Jerusalem/Jerusalem Post — Jerusalem was placed on

high terror alert after Palestinian terrorists set off a
bomb 200 meters south of the Kalandia checkpoint
Wednesday afternoon, killing two Palestinians and
wounding 16, including six border policemen.
Jerusalem police believe a 44-pound bomb was placed
in a bag on the ground near the road and detonated by
a remote-control cell phone. The roadblock was set up
after security forces received a warning that terrorists
were likely on their way to Jerusalem.
The Fatah Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades and the Tanzim,
linked to Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, claimed
responsibility. Zakariya Zubeydi, 29, an Al Aqsa leader
in Jenin, told AP that the original plan was to attack in
Jerusalem, but that the man carrying the explosives was
forced to abandon them near the Kalandia checkpoint
as security forces closed in.
He said the Palestinians killed were not targets. He
said the bombing avenged the killing of a leader by
Israeli troops in the West Bank last month. It was not
clear what happened to the man who detonated the
blast.
Security officials told Israel Radio that specific warn-
ings were received for northern Jerusalem. The officials
added that there was a growing concern at the level of
Hezbollah involvement in Palestinian terrorism.
