ichael Atler, 37, of
Farmington Hills is an
anomaly. He's one of the
rare men walking in the Breast
Cancer 3-Day on Aug. 20-22, a 60-
mile walk benefiting the Susan G.
Komen Breast Cancer Foundation
and the National Philanthropic
Trust.
This is Atler's first time to raise
money for cancer. While breast can-
cer has not affected him directly, he
wants to do something to eradicate
it so his daughters, Ally Sunshine, 7,
and Lexi Joy, 3, can live in a world
free of the disease.
"They're learning along with their
father how to be part of the solu-
tion," says Atler, who now walks his
daughters to school. Each girl has
her own pedometer.
Atler, a furniture manufacturing
representative, will join about 2,400
other walkers locally, including the
volunteer crew. He already raised
$2,100 on his Web site. With cash
donation from friends, he has accu-
mulated $2,300 for the event.
Anyone can donate at Atler's site on
vv-ww th e 3 day. org
Detroit is one of 10 cities this
year holding the walk, which began
in 2002 as the Avon Breast Cancer
.
walk.
"We. average about 95 percent
women walkers, but men also get
breast cancer and have a higher
mortality rate than women because
they don't get checked for it," says
Howard Sitron, chief operating offi-
cer of the Komen Foundation's
three-day event. "About 400 men
.
die of breast cancer a year.
"We hope to raise more than $20
million for breast cancer cure and
research," Sitron says.
Of the net Detroit proceeds, 85
percent goes to the Komen
Foundation in Dallas and 15 per-
cent to the Trust, an independent
public charity in Pennsylvania that
manages the walks.
Of the funds that go to the
Komen Foundation, 25 percent goes
to the local affiliates for screening,
treatment, .education and prevention
