Active In Detroit
I was happy to read of the young
people who are settling in Detroit
("Rockin The D," July 30, page 22).
I, like many others of my generation,
have wonderful memories of a city
that was once vibrant and exciting.
We at the Downtown Synagogue
also have a commitment to a Jewish
presence in Detroit and we would like
to invite the "settlers" to our services
on Saturday mornings at 8:30.
Services are followed by a kosher
lunch.
We are a small but active congrega-
tion who want to remain a vital part
of the city and welcome all.

Successful Mission
I would like to express my gratitude
to all those who made Teen Mission
2004 possible [sponsored by the
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit, Sam and Jean Frankel and
the Detroit Jewish News in partnership
with local congregations] ("Lasting
Impression," July 30, page 26).
They did an outstanding job in
making this teen mission a huge suc-
cess. I'd always hoped that our daugh-
ter would travel through Israel during
a summer before graduating high
school. The past couple of years, I did
not think this would become a reality.
On a whim, I decided we should
attend a meeting knowing there was
no way we would send her. I walked
away from that meeting not only
knowing I would send her, but also
without any trepidation. Not once
have I ever looked back or feared for
her safety. We were kept well
informed and updated through her
entire journey.
I marveled when at 4 p.m., I saw a
photo of her on the Federation Web
site of something she did the very
same day.
The enthusiasm and happiness I
heard in her voice when she called us
from Israel was wonderful.
As I write this, she is on a flight
home. She and I have already spoken
about other opportunities for her to
return to Israel. Camp and other sum-
mer trips in the past were wonderful,
but there is no other destination for a
Jewish teen like Israel. Thank you to
all of you who made this trip safe,
spectacular and possible.
