Great for a lighter lunch!
... To Hof's Hut in Irvine for its deli-
cious home cooking ... To Tutto Fresco
in Rancho Santa Margarita for lamb
chops like you won't believe ... To Pads
Pantry in Mission Viejo for French toast
made with cinnamon buns. And what
would a visit to Los Angeles be without
going to Nate & Al's Delicatessen and
Canter's Delicatessen.
As good as the restaurants are in
California, many of them might take a
lesson or two in making Caesar Salad
from an amateur ... No wonder barrister
Jeffrey Metzger has so many clients come
to his law offices in Laguna Hills.

READERS WHO HAVE asked
where there is an Israeli restaurant will
have their answer before the end of the
year ... Yossi's Israeli Cuisine will open in
Robin's Nest, on the Orchard Lake Road
side, north of 14 Mile, in West
Bloomfield ... Owner Yossi Benjamin is a
former Israeli restaurateur.
ORIGINAL RECIPE for the excel-
lent egg rolls at Hoa Hoa Inn on Novi
Road, south of 14 Mile, is that of noted
local Chinese restaurant gent, Eugene
Foo, late owner of King Fong's on
Dexter and Kow Kow Inn on West
McNichols, both in Detroit ... He was
the uncle of Hoa Hoa owner Gene
Woo's father, Dan Woo.
Hoa Hoa is the former Hoa Kow Inn
of Oak Park and West Bloomfield ... and
still hasn't used lard since 1976 ... It is
probably the only Chinese restaurant
hereabouts that serves Imperial sauteed
white meat chicken with oyster mush-
rooms and oyster sauce.
Jewish News receptionist Jan Shain
joins the long list of folks who have
loved the veal cutlets for so many years.
IT WAS THE wedding reception they
never had ... getting married in Russia
during World War II. The time was of
desperation and struggle ... He was a
poor hard-working tailor who made his
wife her first coat out of a blanket ...
promising that some day he would make
her a fancier one in America.
Recently, Klara and Harry Lenchner
celebrated their 60th anniversary at the
Fiddler restaurant banquet room in West
Bloomfield ... And while dancing with
each other, probably thought, as they
always do, how wonderful it was to live
in America ... They had spent their first
32 years as man and wife in Russia
before being able to come here ... where,
he says, they could live wonderful years
to the fullest. More than 100 friends and
relatives came to celebrate Klara and
Harry's anniversary ... as tables were
filled with bottles of champagne, vodka
and Crown Royal, and the bar never
stopped serving.
There was almost enough food on the
Fiddler banquet tables to, perhaps, feed
their community back in Russia ...
blinis, chopped liver, smoked salmon,
sable, eggs stuffed with chopped liver,
herring, etc. ... after passed hors d'oeu-
vres ... But it still wasn't all ... Then came
lamb chops, veal, chicken, etc., in a
never-ending bevy of tasty goodness.
Others also joined Klara and Harry in
celebrations of their own as well ... Vera
and Andy Weiss anniversary number 34
... Years back when Ben Heller came to
meet Gabrielle Friedman's mother and
father, Tamara and Eugene Friedman, he
was somewhat jokingly told by Tamara,
"You're never going to marry my daugh-
ter!" ... Today it's a steady laugh-getter
for them as Ben and Gabrielle (Gabby)
celebrated their 10th anniversary at the
party for their grandparents.
Harriett and Bob Dunsky, Harvey and
Elaine Minkin, Hillary and John Valone,
Helen and Uri Lenchner, Angie and
Eddie Gershman, etc. ... watching as
Harry danced with all the girls when not
holding Klara in his arms ... and maybe
asking her, "Why would you want me to
keep my promise and make you a coat
when you can now buy any kind and all
the coats you ever wanted?"

IF YOU GO TO the new Gaffe
Milano at former site of Excalibur,
Northwestern Highway and 12 Mile, in
Southfield and want butter, better be
sure you brought your own ... It doesn't
serve any ... just olive oil for dipping the
bread from Cantoro's Bakery ... As for
the olive oil, a bib or extra napkins
might be needed since diners scoop it
out of a cup-like bowl with a tiny
spoon. ❑
