PLATINUM

rom a parent's point of view, packing your child for college
can be physically and emotionally exhausting. I have first-
hand experience after sending three children off to college.
I've walked the aisles of Bed, Bath & Beyond, overheard
calls between roommates deciding on who brings the microwave, and felt
the anxiety of watching your beloved child leave and not return until
Thanksgiving. For this issue of Platinum, we understand your anxiety, and
we aim to help you pack for college.
Our intern, Liza Lax (above, left), a senior at the University of
Michigan, knows the ins and outs of packing. So read her story, Dorm
Basics 101. Better yet, let your college-bound student read the story filled
with tips.
On the other end of the spectrum, Platinum helps you design your new-
born's room with the latest accessories. Jodi Charnas (above, right), another
intern at Platinum, interviewed Jackie Sandweiss who hand picks unique
items for her store located in her Birmingham home.
Also in this issue, we introduce a new monthly column "Cool Runnings"
by Harry Kirsbaum. Kirsbaum has the ability to write about a plethora of
topics from the Pistons to Abraham Foxman in his weekly JN column,
"Last Call." He named his Platinum column "Cool Runnings" after the
1993 movie about the Jamaican bobsled team practicing for the Olympics
without snow. "I thought the name fits the column," said. Kirsbaum. "It's
[the column] something innovative about cars. It will give me a chance to
drive a car I would normally only see at the auto show." With Kirsbaum's
sense of humor and quirky style, expect the unexpected. He debuts "Cool
Runnings" with a personal essay about his own car.
On the fashion scene, we unveil Oscar de la Renta's glamorous fall col-
lection presented by Saks Fifth Avenue. Even though we present autumn
fashions, please enjoy the rest of the summer.

Sincerely,

Carla
