Enters Movie In Festival

Michael Chait, 19, just completed
filming "Unfinished Business," his
first 35 mm film, which he submit-
ted to the Sundance Film Festival
competition. Two years ago, the JN
featured Chait, then a high school
student, as a "Young Man On The
Move" after attracting the attention
of two Hollywood movie teams film-
ing in Detroit. A junior this
September in filmmaking at Chicago's
Columbia College, Chait has his
heart set on Hollywood.

When did you decide to be a direc-
tor?
"I was in seventh or eight grade
when I first noticed the directing
style — not just the story line — of
a movie. I was watching The Rock
with Sean Connery and Michael
Bay directing. Ever since then, I
wanted to make movies."

What's Unfinished Business about?
"Two best friends in the Air Force

both fall in love with the same
woman. It gets complicated: One
kills the girl; the other is left for
dead. There's a heist of military
weapons and a karate fight in an
airplane hangar to stop the bad guy
from getting onto the jet." (The
film is 15 minutes long.)

Where do you shoot your films?
"This was partly filmed at the
Oakland International Airport
where we have a helicopter chasing
a car and a fight scene in the
hangar. When I found out one of
the actors was a black belt, I asked
him if he could flip in the air, turn
around and kick the bad guy in the

What's your ultimate
goal?
"My job is to get into
mainstream filmmaking
and make a classic
Hollywood film. I'm dedi-
cated. Filmmaking is one
thing I won't lose; I'm insane about
it." ❑
