Catch these airfares
before they fly away

true with changes made to protect
identities and condense time and situ-
ations. Before sending his final draft to
the publisher, he let people approve
the parts about themselves.
The essayist, who dropped out of
law studies at Wayne State University,
traveled inside and outside America
and lived on a kibbutz before settling
in New York in 1993. The desire to
write strengthened during his years
working as a researcher at Vanity Fair.
While doing freelance writing for
various publications, he moved on to a
marketing-consulting job for a large
corporation and then used his skills
for an Internet firm. A humorous arti-
cle about facing layoffs — loosely
based on his own job loss — was seen
by an agent and eventually led to a
book proposal and deal.
"While I was making no money as
an unemployed writer, I figured I
might as well begin another money-
losing endeavor, which was standup
comedy," explains Hyman, who has
performed locally at Mark Ridley's
Comedy Castle and Second City, the
latter for a Jewish Federation of Metro-
politan Detroit benefit. "Doing
standup is the best way to learn how to
be fearless. It also was a great way into
a different community in New York."
Hyman, who made the decision not
to have a bar mitzvah, connects with
the Jewish community through the
Brotherhood Synagogue near his New
York City apartment. Knowing people
in remission from cancer, he connect-
ed with the Leukemia and Lymphoma
Society and supports the organization
by participating in its triathlon Team
in Training program.
"I think people tend to like to talk
about themselves because we're all ego-
driven, and I translated that into writ-
ing," says Hyman, who remains open
about very intimate and explicit details
of his carnal encounters.
"`Metrosexuar is a cultural reference
and a way to make a commentary on
modern manhood, which I do
through my own foibles and misad-
ventures. The book is as much per-
sonal essays as it is social commen-
taries."
