EverWood® X-tra

They look like shutters. Work like
blinds. To look at them you'd swear
they're real wood shutters. Buy you
can open and close the slats, or raise
and lower them, just like a blind.
Best of all, they're EverWood®,
an alternative wood blind with the
character and warmth of real wood.
Which means they won't crack, peel,
warp or fade. Even in humid areas
like the kitchen or bathroom.

A Cup Of Truth

An urban legend about Starbucks and Israel.

ELIZABETH APPLEBAUM

Apple Tree Editor

Q: A friend of mine just sent me
an e-mail telling me I shouldn't
patronize Starbucks because the
company shut down business in
Israel. According to this e-mail,
Starbucks is very much against the
State of Israel. Is that true?
A: Put this in the same category as
those spiders you have to look out
for in airport toilets.
For reasons no thinking person
can understand, some folks out there
like to make up oddball stories and
circulate them on the Internet.
Among these is the dumb "Starbucks
hates Israel" routine.
For your information, the owner
of Starbucks is an outspoken
Zionist. Starbucks did open, then
close, a few shops in Israel. These
were franchises managed by Israelis,
and the closings had nothing to do
with anti-Zionism (Think about it:
Would Starbucks company directors
have opened there in the first place
if they hated Israel so much?); it was
strictly a business decision.
Remember that Israel has a long
history of coffee shops, and Israelis
are famously loyal to favorites. In
such a market, Starbucks really did-
n't have a chance.
Before you ask, let me clear up
two more e-rumors: Designer
Tommy Hilfiger never said he does-
n't want "blacks and Jews and Asians
wearing my clothes," and singer
Shakira never said she would prefer
pigs, rather than Israelis, listening to
her music.
You can find all your favorite
urban legends (like the need to be
wary of spiders on toilets in airports)
debunked at www.snopes.com

Q: When I was little, I remember
my family always sang "Shalom

Aleichem" on Friday nights. But I
never knew why. Can you tell me
what this song is about and why we
sing it?
A: "Shalom Aleichem" ("Peace to
You") is sung to visiting angels.
For thousands of years, some Jews
have believed that angels brought
them to and from synagogue on
Friday night (You can read more
about this in the Talmud, in Shabbat
119b.) Naturally, you would want to
offer a warm greeting to these visi-
tors as they came inside your home
on Shabbat. It wasn't until the 16th
century, though, that somebody
finally got around to writing just the
catchy number needed for the job. It
was, in fact, Kabbalists who came up
with the very "Shalom Aleichem"
that we know today.

Q: True or false: the first psychoan-
alyst in England was Jewish?
A: It's true. Montague David Eder
(1865-1936) was the first psychoan-
alyst to open a practice in England.
He also was active in numerous
Jewish causes and was invited by
Chaim Weizmann to participate in
the Zionist Commission for
Palestine.
Interestingly, Eder came from a
background with absolutely no
Zionist leanings. Nonetheless, he
was deeply committed to the cause,
serving as president of the Zionist
Federation of Great Britain and
Ireland from 1930 1932. He even
traveled to Russia in an effort to
convince authorities there to allow
for more Zionist activities; his
attempt failed.
Eder was a charming figure, much
admired and loved not only by the
Jewish community of Great Britain
but by governmental leaders in
England, as well.
In addition to being the country's
first practicing psychoanalyst, he was
co-founder, with Ernest Jones, in
1913, of the Psychoanalytical
Association. ❑
