A Survivor's Voice

Late father's Holocaust oral history prompts
$1.5 million goal for UM-Dearborn archive.

HARRY KIRSBAUM

StajrWriter

A

chance encounter on the
Web has produced a
$100,000 donation and
a $1.5 million goal for a
University of Michigan-
Dearborn program that records
Holocaust survivor testimony.
Joel Dorfman of Bloomfield
Hills had never heard his
father's story of surviving the
Holocaust until a friend saw it
on the Voice/Vision Holocaust
Survivor Oral History Archive
holocaust.umd.umich.edu/ and
directed him there.
Dorfman vaguely remem-
bered that his father, Henry
Dorfman, who died in 2001,
had a conversation
with Sidney Bolkosky,
UM-D professor of
history. In a statement
from the university,
Joel said he never knew
the extent of the con-
versations.
"My dad's typical,
matter-of-fact response
when asked where he'd
been all day, was some-
thing like,
like, 'I went to
the office, had lunch
with a friend, met with
Sid Bolkosky and came home.'
"To hear his voice when he was in
the prime of his life talking about
wartime experiences was remarkable
— and eerie, especially since he'd
been gone about two-and-a-half
years," Dorfman said.
Overwhelmed by the experience,
Dorfman then notified other family
members. He told them how valuable
it was to be able to access this kind of
information — for their family and
others.
He contacted Bolkosky to compli-
ment him on his work and then vol-
unteered to help sustain the program
through fund-raising and other activi-
ties.
The Dorfman family recently gave
$100,000 from the Henry S. and
Mala Dorfman Family Foundation,
with a goal to raise $1.5 million over
the next four years to support efforts

to interview more survivors and to
publish and disseminate the tran-
scripts, he said.
Bolkosky has interviewed more
than 150 Holocaust survivors and has
recorded about 330 hours of audio-
tapes and 60 hours of video.
The archive Web site receives about
750,000 hits a year and the average
hit is 15 minutes, said Bolkosky, who
also teaches "Aspects of the
Holocaust," a course at UM-D.
"It makes you feel like you're at
least accomplishing something. The
student use has been overwhelming,"
Bolkosky said.
