Obituaries
Q
: You recently conducted my mother's funeral
and gave us many copies of the audio tape of
the funeral. This was very much appreciated.
My father died 29 years ago. I wonder if a tape
was made at the time and, if so, how I could
obtain one?

A:
We have been audio taping funerals for
about 20 years. Today, we place an audio tape in
the register box,.so someone in the family has a
copy. We also save a copy for a few weeks so, if
the family wants multiple copies, we can make
them. Unfortunately, we were not taping funerals
when your dad died.

Sharing Enthusiasm
B
etty Silverfarb, 86, of West
Bloomfield, died July 4,
2004. For more than 50
years, she was a mainstay in dozens
of Jewish organizations and causes.
She served as president and offi-
cer of B'nai B'rith Women, Pioneer
Women-Na'amat, WIZO, National
Council of Jewish Women and
Hadassah, among others. Her hus-
band, Grant, would say there wasn't
a Jewish organization in the city
that Betty wasn't active in.
"One of her longtime friends told
me," said son Robert Rockaway of
Israel, "when Betty came to meet-
ings, she invariably lit up the room
with her presence and enthusiasm.
And if there were
some problem, she
immediately took
charge and solved it.
She was wonderful.
"Her innumerable
awards and honors
from these organiza-
tions attest to the
esteem in which she
was held," said her
son.
For more than 30
years, Betty and
Grant Silverfarb
made ongoing phil-
anthropic contribu-
tions to dozens of
Jewish and non-
Jewish charities,
including the American Cancer
Society, University of Michigan
Hospital, Congregation B'nai
David, WIZO, United Jewish
Appeal, Meals on Wheels and
Jewish Community Center as well
as other Israeli charities and educa-
tional institutions, including chil-
dren's homes for the blind and the
deaf, the ORT home, the Red
Magen David, Tel Aviv University,
Bar-Ilan University and Technion-
Israel Institute of Technology.
In recognition of her years of
dedication and charitable work, the
city of Detroit honored her with its
Heart of Gold award. Mrs.
Silverfarb also helped innumerable
people directly and anonymously.
There was more to Mrs.
Silverfarb, however, than just her
charitable and organizational work.
She was also a mother. Her first
husband died in 1939 when she
was just 20, and she had to go to
work to support her 9-month-old
son. She moved in with her parents,
who helped raise him. Despite
working six days a week, she always
made time to be with her child.
Rockaway, author of the book on
Jewish mobsters, But He Was Good
to His Mother: The Lives and Crimes
of Jewish Gangsters, was staying with
his parents while researching the
chapter on Detroit's Purple Gang.
"One time, I was telling my mother
about Harry Fleisher, a Purple
Gang stalwart," he
said. "My mother
knew him because
his father had ped-
dled with my
grandfather.
"She listened
politely as I recited
some of Fleisher's
more nefarious
exploits. When I
finished, she looked
at me and said,
`That may be true.
But you know, he
was always good to
his mother.' A light
went on in my
head; and I said,
`Mom, you've just given me the
title to my book.'"
Betty Silverfarb is survived by her
husband, Grant; son, Robert
Rockaway; brother-in-law and sis-
ters-in-law, Louis and Dora
Silverfarb, Rose Kaluzny, Mary
Niskar, Annette Kaluzny; grandchil-
dren, Eytan Rockaway, Shiran
Rockaway.
She was the loving daughter of
the late Nathan Kaluzny and the
late Dora Kaluzny.
Interment was at Hebrew
Memorial Park. Contributions may
be made to Magen David Adorn,
23470 Riverview, Southfield, MI
48034. Arrangements by Hebrew
Memorial Chapel. 1-1
