The Poetry Corner

CALVIN TRILLIN, the entertain-
ing writer for the New Yorker and
other magazines, has been on the
talk-show circuit hawking his latest
book, Obliviously On He Sails, sub-
titled "The Bush Administration in
Rhyme." It's a collection of mostly
short, witty poems Trillin wrote for
the Nation.
The author broke up Daily Show
host JON STEWART when he read
a few lines from a poem about
Attorney General John Ashcroft,
telling an evangelical audience that
we are a "Christian nation."
Trillin imagined Ashcroft telling
the crowd, "The only king we have
is Jesus and I feel blessed to bring
the news /The only king we have is
Jesus/ and I cannot explain the
Jews."
Trillin's book is entertaining, but
a $12.95 price-tag seems a bit stiff
for a slim volume one could read in
the bookstore in about 20 minutes.
In any event, LOUISE GLUCK,
a Jewish poet who is now finishing
her one-year term as the 12th poet
laureate of the United. States, does-
n't have to worry about Trillin out-
shining her in the eyes of literary
critics.

Jewish Journalist?

Music star and teen fave Justin
Timberlake has just concluded film-
ing Edison, a big-budget flick co-
starring Morgan Freeman and
Kevin Spacey. Timberlake plays
JOSHUA POLLACK, a rookie
journalist who covers the local
Jewish community for a small city
newspaper.
Timberlake told the Memphis
Commercial Appeal, "[Pollack's]
Jewish, but not religious."
The movie takes off when Pollack
goes off his assigned news beat and
uncovers official corruption.

"One of America's Best Restaurants"

To get ready for his dramatic
screen debut, Timberlake tagged
around with a Pulitzer-winning AP
investigative reporter. No mention
of Timberlake learning how to be a
Jewish community reporter by fol-
lowing someone who writes for a
Jewish paper.

Meanwhile; BARRY LEVINSON
is about to start making My Italian
Story, about an Italian Jewish boy
during World War II who hunts for
a rabbi to bar mitzvah him.
And down in Miami, Dolphins
third-string quarterback SAGE
ROSENFELS got a lot of press
when he announced he is willing to
appear at b'nai mitzvah for a fee.
Rosenfels plays behind JAY
FIEDLER, the team's first-string
quarterback.
