T

he Holiday: Tisha b'Av.

When We Observe:
The ninth, or tisha, day of the
Hebrew month of Av. This year, Tisha
b'Av begins Monday night, July 26,
and ends Tuesday night, July 27.

Why We Observe:
On this day, on two separate occa-
sions, the Holy Temple of Jerusalem
was destroyed. Other tragedies also
have befallen the Jewish people on this
day. These include:
• The end of the Bar Kochba revolt
in 135 C.E.
• Pope Urban II's first crusade
against the Jews begins on this day in
1095. More than 10,000 Jews were
murdered the first month of this cru-
sade, which destroyed Jewish commu-
nities throughout the Rhineland and
in France.
• The expulsion of the Jews of
England began on this day in 1290.
• The expulsion of the Jews of the
Iberian Peninsula, part of the Spanish
Inquisition, occurred on this day in
1492.
• World War I started on this day in
1914 when England and Russia
declare war on Germany. This war will
ultimately lead to World War II and
the murder of more than 6 million
Jews throughout Europe.
, • The deportation of Jews from the
Warsaw Ghetto began on this day in
1942.. Jews are sent to the Treblinka
concentration camp.
• The Jewish Community Center of
Buenos Aires, Argentina, was bombed
on this day in 1994. Eighty-six people

were killed and more than 300 were
wounded.
