CD rates this high?
We had to look twice to believe them!
•
Visit our Birmingham or Farmington Hills branches, or call
plus visitors each year. The JCC Lenore
Marwil Film Festival's audience is close
to that. The new JCC MusicFest, the .
community-wide Seminars for Adult
Jewish Enrichment, institutionally
sponsored concerts and performances,
the Janice Charach Epstein Gallery and
the Jewish Ensemble Theatre all attract
meaningful audiences, and largely from
the key demographic of 22- to 35-year-
olds. But all are supported by a tiny
stream of modest-size contributions
from a small, highly motivated spec-
trum of individuals.
Both the age and size of attendance
are proof of the demand and recogni-
tion of the meaning of the cultural
enterprise to living Jewishly.

Don't Ignore Creative Potential
So what's the problem? It's the problem
of lost opportunity!
The more we educate, the more we
transmit knowledge, the more we seek
to express our identity as contemporary
American Jews. This is ultimately the
role of the next generation, to define
the contours of American Jewish life
and culture.... And it is incredibly
shortsighted of us to ignore their cre-
ative potential.
Where are the resources to integrate
creativity into classes and workshops in
order to tie learning and knowledge
with wisdom and expression? To move
the audience from personal Jewish expe-
rience to the understanding of commu-
nity and continuity?
Where are the 'programs to help and
encourage artists to express their Jewish
traditions and ideas. Where are the
philanthropic initiatives to give young
people the opportunity to learn and to
express themselves Jewishly through the
media of visual arts, literature, film, the-
ater, dance or music.
Our community's leadership must
find a way to more vigorously integrate
cultural activity into its formal plan-
ning, allocations and endowment devel-
opment if it's to match the community's
growing knowledge with appropriate
creative expression.
This is not just about making the
experience of living Jewishly in our
community more meaningful ...
although that's not a shabby result. It's
also about increasing the numbers of
Jews who believe they are part of a
community, who are willing to stand
with it, participate in it and support it.
It's about insuring a creative community
for the next generation, which ought to
be significant motivation for that lead-
ership, as well.
