Protest Backfires wvvw.matthewsforjudge.com Paid for by Citizens to Elect Cheryl Matthews, 2120 Garland, Sylvan Lake, MI 48320 863140 Shoppers bypass picketers, filling Hiller's Market in support of Israel. SHELLI LIEBMAN DORFMAN Staff Writer Ann Arbor nstead of keeping shoppers out of Hiller's Market in Ann Arbor as they'd hoped, pro-Palestinian protesters prompted a crowd of more than 300 who came to shop July 18 as a show of support for Israel — and the store's owner Jim Hiller. Each Sunday afternoon, for the last three months, the Jewish Witnesses for Peace and Friends have been picketing on the street in front of the store, calling for a boy- cott of the supermarket. They protest Hiller's sale of Israeli prod- ucts and the donation of profits to Israeli institutions and programs. "I was really heartened but not surprised to see the incredible show of support for Israel and for Jim," said Jeff Levin, executive director of the Jewish Federation of Washtenaw County in Ann Arbor. Levin had sent out 2,000 e-mails applauding Hiller's efforts and asking the com- munity for a show of support for the store and its owner. While 15 or 20 protesters carried I signs on the sidewalk in front of the store's parking lot last Sunday, inside Hiller's, shoppers filled carts with products, including Israel- made items, filing into balloon- lined checkout lanes. Among the shoppers — including carloads who traveled to Ann Arbor from Detroit-area suburbs — were those who parked blocks away to avoid standstill traffic leading to the store. A Federation-sponsored project included a booth inside the store where 140 blue and white T-shirts were sold with the words, "Wherever We Stand, We Stand With Israel" printed on them. And that seems to be the point, according to Levin. "We understand that supporting Israel doesn't have to mean you. endorse every single policy of the government," he said. "When it comes to Israel, we take pride in the incredible accomplishments and incredible dynamics of the survival of the Jewish state. And that's why so many people turned out." ❑ For more photos, go to: www.detroitjewishnews.com on ree Admission • August 7-8, 2004 • Sat.110-7 at Sun. 11-5 The beautiful grounds of Orchard Lake St. Mary's Campus Orchard Lake at Commerce Roads (Seven miles north of 1-690 125 World (lass Artists from 27 States `This may be the most beautiful art show in Michigan" Relax in lush landscaped gardens built just for the event CASINO I NDSOR" Rilbsennt 'Emig* 1.1.7.14 .4 7 ‘51.774 77477707Sti • 7•••• ■ .17 r at. eyie rscied Preview Party • FridayAug.6 • 6:00Pm -930Pm - Features Savories and Beverages by: GAI-LO.•SONOMA FINLANDIAvms 16Artidet4 tam. iF Featuring the jazzy music of the Sheila Landis Trio • Tickets $25 online at tidcetweb.com www.ArtShowinfaxamo EI(11:s • MET 1 01,1 3R1 HOUR 4.171, 60•T Monday.
