A loose band or bracket will usually still be attached to the wire.
You should leave it in place, however if it is uncomfortable, place
wax on it. The bracket no longer attached to the tooth does mean
that no controlled force is being applied to the tooth so you
should call the office to arrange for it to be re-applied at

Sometimes a wire may become loose. You may try to place
the wire back in with a tweezer. If that is not possible, clip the wire with fingernail
clippers behind the last tooth to which it is securely fastened. Once again, if there is any
discomfort you may place wax on it until your next opportunity to go to the orthodontist.

If the wire is poking you, you may try to push the sticking wire down with the eraser
portion of a pencil. If not possible, the old stand-by is to place wax on it.

If an elastic tie (which helps hold the wire to the bracket) is lost, this is not an emergency
and just notify the orthodontist at the next visit.

If you experience some discomfort, you may use warm salt water rinses and/or Tylenol,
Ibuprofen or whatever you may use for a mild headache. For more pronounced
discomfort, you should contact the orthodontist's offiCe.

Lastly, if an appliance becomes loose or is poking somewhere you may try to place wax on
it. You may be able to solve many orthodontic problems temporarily by yourself, but be
sure to make the office aware of problems so your next appointment can be scheduled •
with enough time to make the necessary repairs.
