W bile convalescing from a seri-
ous injury incurred while on
active duty in Iraq, Joseph
Kashnow, a U.S. Army cavalry scout,
had time to think about the difficulties
he encountered trying to remain an
observant Jew in the service.
In the midst of a series of 10 recon-
structive surgical procedures on his leg,
following a September 2003 terrorist
ambush attack, Kashnow, 25, of
Baltimore, and his wife, Sarai, 23, have
founded the nonprofit Jewish Soldier
Foundation. The goal of the organiza-
tion is to ensure soldiers the means to
observe Jewish laws and traditions.

The Kashnows
of Saddam's
palaces — Kashnow encountered some
who made the observance difficult.
"Trying to be observant in the Army,
I experienced a lot of hassles that should
never have occurred," Kashnow wrote in
an interview on the aish.com Web site.
"The Army lost all the kosher food I'd
brought with me, and my wife had to
work hard back in the States just to
make sure I was fed. The United States
Army needs to be more welcoming and
supportive of religious Jews, and I want
to make the road easier for others."
In Kashnow's aish.com Web posting,
he wrote, "Our goal is to ensure that
Jewish soldiers — observant or not —
have whatever they need: kosher food,
holiday packages, educational resources
and the full spectrum of ritual services.
I'm proud of my service in Iraq. I've
emerged with a greater commitment to
Torah and to helping other Jews. I love
the United States Army and I just want
to make it the best place it can be."
